The Electrical Engineering Official Central Laboratory (LCOE) has obtained the first accreditation to calibrate VLF (very low frequency) generators used in testing high voltage line cable insulation.

These tests assess the insulation's ability to withstand certain tensions and prevent cables from malfunctioning when in service and subsequent use, which could cause not only a power outage, but also in the worst-case scenario, an accident or fire.

For this type of testing VLF generators can be used, whose calibration is important to ensure that they correctly measure the tension applied during testing, thereby guaranteeing it is neither too small; insufficient to check the state of isolation, nor too big, which could jeopardize the integrity of the cable test. In this specific case, LCOE has been accredited to operate frequency between 0.01 Hz and 1 Hz and voltages of up to 100 kV.

Accredited calibration services assure that the results this measuring equipment provide are correct, thereby guaranteeing the safety of the tested cables, since the calibration laboratory has proven to ENAC to be technically competent to carry out this activity.

This means the laboratory personnel has the appropriate technical knowledge and experience, with the necessary equipment and facilities properly maintained, their calibrations are carried out using technically valid methods and procedures and that its activity is subject to strict quality controls, a guarantee only offered by accredited laboratories.
