EMS Brüel & Kjær monitoring laboratory has obtained the first accreditation for monitoring environmental noise level testing at airports, according to the ISO 20906 standard, specifically, at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona - El Prat airports managed by AENA. It is the first accreditation not only nationally, but also internationally, since the laboratory is a pioneer in developing this accredited activity worldwide.

The accredited test is to determine the noise produced by aircraft in an airport environment, in accordance with the international ISO 20906 standard. To do this, the laboratory has a network of fixed stations for measuring noise levels and meteorological conditions or TMRs (noise monitoring terminals), which are located at strategic points in the airport’s vicinity or in nearby towns flown over during aircraft take-off and landing operations. These terminals electronically forward the measurement results to be received, finally, on the servers of each airport.

This type of accredited testing generated a significant impact in terms of environmental protection. María Jesús Ballesteros, Brüel & Kjær EMS Monitoring Laboratory Technical Director, explains that "They are a public information tool, and monitor the noise levels produced by aeronautical operations in the airports environment.” In addition, she adds, that "accreditation has been a guarantee for test quality, backed by an external body, which increases the quality and confidence in the results to third parties.”
