ENAC has granted accreditation to the Public Health Service-managed Municipal Laboratory of Vitoria-Gasteiz, becoming the first laboratory in Spain to apply an alternative technique for detecting gluten in food, called immunoturbidimetry.

This technique is based, like the ELISA technique, on the reaction between antibodies and gluten present in food and other samples, in this case causes a turbidity that can also be measured using optical instruments, enabling small concentrations of this protein to be detected. It is a fast, easily reproduced method and can be automated.

With this accreditation, the laboratory has demonstrated that it meets the requirements of the UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard and, therefore, that it has the technical resources, competent personnel, and appropriate procedures to carry out reliable testing. By formally recognizing the technical competence of this laboratory, whose results will also have international recognition, confidence is provided to all parties involved in this activity and its main beneficiaries, the consumers.

The mayoress of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Maider Etxebarria, expressed her satisfaction with this new recognition, which "strengthens the Municipal Laboratory, enhancing its prestige by offering a service of higher quality, protection, and safety, tailored to the needs of all people".
