Bodies collaborating with the Hydraulic Administration in matters of dam and reservoir safety can now apply for ENAC accreditation
The Public Administration relies, once again, on accreditation as a tool to ensure the safety and integrity of assessment activities, in this case, related to inspecting and controlling dam and reservoir safety.
The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge recently published Order TED/934/2025, which establishes the legal framework for bodies collaborating with the Hydraulic Administration regarding the safety of dams and reservoirs.
These bodies are authorized to cooperate with the competent Public Administration, in this case, with the General Directorate of Water, in control activities of a specialized technical nature related to the safety of dams and reservoirs. Among the requirements established in the Order, the Ministry requires that applicants have ENAC accreditation based on the inspection standard UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17020.
To this end, ENAC and the General Directorate of Water worked closely together to define the requirements, adapting them to the inspection standard requirements and the specific needs of the Ministry.
Following the Order’s publication and the accreditation scheme’s development, ENAC is ready to assess the Hydraulic Administration’s collaborating bodies in the dam and reservoir safety field. Supporting different administrations in defining and designing accreditation schemes tailored to their needs is a strategic activity for ENAC, increasingly valued by regulators to effectively implement their compliance assessment policies. More than 200 national and regional regulations, as well as over 100 European ones, currently include accreditation to ensure the reliability of products and services, develop safe markets, and strengthen consumer protection in areas as diverse as industrial safety, public health, cybersecurity, food control, and environmental protection.
