First accreditations for CAR-T cell quantification: an essential test for treating hematologic malignancies
The National Accreditation Body (ENAC) has granted the University Hospital Niño Jesús and the University Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca accreditation according to the UNE-EN ISO 15189 standard for performing the CAR-T cell quantification test. This test is essential in monitoring patients with oncohematological neoplasms treated with CAR-T therapy.
CAR-T therapy, or "chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy," is based on the collection of T- lymphocytes from the patient, which are then cultured and genetically modified to express a chimeric receptor (CAR) capable of recognizing specific antigens on tumour cells. Once reinfused into the patient, these modified cells identify and destroy cancer cells.
The quantification of CAR-T cells can be performed using techniques such as real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) or flow cytometry. Hospital Niño Jesús was the first to receive this accreditation in 2024 for performing the test using qPCR. This is now joined by the recent accreditation of Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, which carries out the test using flow cytometry.
